Description
Online version of a story from School Journal L4 May 2016. In this story, set in Sāmoa, a young boy and his grandfather accompany the boy’s older brother, Ioane, to a traditional tattooing ceremony to mark Ioane’s transition to manhood. During the course of the ceremony, the grandfather explains the significance of the tattoo design by telling the boy the traditional story. In the story, a young man, Tataua, proves his courage by defeating a monsterous octopus, Uliuli. The scars Tataua received in the battle are captured in the lines of the tattoo.
