Some highlights this year include: a central North Island sheep farmer who loses his farm to Lord of the Rings tourism, a boozed up bride planning the perfect wedding night, if only she can get her appliances to work, an apocalyptic crisis in a pet food factory in Miramar, the delicate explorations of a Maori Mormon matriarch, and a Vietnam veteran on Anzac Day. Go Solo 2008 is directed by Jade Eriksen (Penumbra, Arcane, Pakiwaitara), Toi Whakaari Director Annie Ruth and 2007 acting graduate Sophie Roberts (Angels in America, Streetcar Named Desire). The Awards will be held at the Concert Chamber, Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato on the 22 August 2008 @ 5:30. Admission is free and all are welcome.
Entertainment will be provided by Extra Shot, the harmony quartet from Waikato Diocesan School, winners of the novice section of the recent Sweet Adelines National Competition 2008. Fusion Dance Company will also perform two dances. Fusion was the runners up in the FISAF & SDNZ National Dance competitions and have qualified to send their groups to Russia and Los Angeles later this year. Leilani Rorani, the Minister of Youth Affairs – Nanaia Mahuta, other parliamentarians and city councilors will be amongst the celebrity guests presenting awards that evening. The first 200 students who attend will be given “goody bags” courtesy of all the sponsors of the competition. Oliver Raman, Chairman of the organising Trust, says that they have gone all out to make it the best Awards evening of the Photographic Competition thus far.
