These booklets are now available to download. The resource explains what ESOL specialists and mainstream teachers need to know about English language learners, and will help teachers to choose content, vocabulary, and tasks that are appropriate for each learner's needs. The booklets were distributed to schools in term 1 2008.

Change in ordering process for MOE resources and publications
The process for schools to order Ministry of Education resources and publications has changed. From 1 March 2008, Wickliffe Ltd is responsible for customer services and warehousing of the Ministry's publications and resources – to order, phone 0800 660 662 or fax 0800 660 663. A new catalogue will soon be available for ordering online or by email.

Read this summary of findings from the evaluation of this
professional development project. The pilot project was to inform the Ministry of Education about effective ways of working with Pasifika students in secondary school literacy settings. Exemplary practices were identified, and findings from the pilot will be used to increase effective literacy teaching and learning in secondary schools, especially those with high numbers of Pasifika students.

Bilingual Assessment Service Information
Read about this service that enables state and state-integrated schools to access a targeted group of trained Resource Teachers: Learning and Behaviour (RTLBs) to administer bilingual assessments of the learning needs of students from language backgrounds other than English. A bilingual assessment can distinguish between language learning needs, additional special learning needs and social/emotional needs, through dual assessment in their first language and English.

The Selections series provides appropriate, high-interest, theme-based reading for students from non-English-speaking backgrounds in years 7-13 who find the usual classroom reading material more difficult. Frog Pond and Other Stories for students in years 5–6 and Creepy and Other Stories for students in years 7–10 each contain ten stories and articles with photographs or illustrations, audio, glossaries, and interactive activities. These interactive CD-ROMs will appeal to students of all abilities, in particular those who are not yet proficient readers and ESOL students. Student activities include writing their own message, poem, cartoon, or presentation. The supporting teachers' notes booklet for each resource provides a users' guide, suggested teaching purposes, advice on teaching approaches, and notes on the texts.

This folder helps schools and mainstream teachers to develop policies, procedures, and programmes to meet the needs of ESOL students. The three sections are ESOL Resourcing Information, Refugee Student Information, and International Fee-paying Student Information. All schools with ESOL funded students or international students have been sent this folder. Teaching English In Schools to Speakers of Other Languages (TESSOL) Tuition Fees Scholarships
The Ministry of Education is providing scholarships for teachers currently teaching in specialist ESOL classes or mainstream classrooms to gain ESOL qualifications. The scholarships will be awarded in three categories: Migrant Initiative, Pasifika Initiative, and International Initiative.
