Teacher Professional Development Languages (TPDL) Years 7-10 (PDF 379KB)
Over 150 teachers have completed this Ministry of Education funded programme to support schools to cater effectively for Learning Languages.

For 2010 the number of places has been increased to include 60 for teachers of Chinese, French, German, Japanese or Spanish plus a further 20 for teachers of Samoan and Cook Islands Māori.(Other Pasifika languages will be catered for over the next two years.)

Language study, pedagogy and In-school Support are the three components of TPDL. All teachers of languages, regardless of their teaching or language learning experience, are catered for.

Auckland UniServices of the University of Auckland is contracted to deliver this programme nationally. Principals or teachers should contact the project director Wendy Thomson w.thomson@auckland.ac.nz as soon as possible to ensure a place. Schools are encouraged to register more than one teacher.

Te Marautanga o Aotearoa is the partner document of The New Zealand Curriculum. It has been developed for Māori medium settings levels 1 and 2, and has been developed based on Māori philosophies and principles.

LEAP
LEAP (Language Enhancing the Achievement of Pasifika) is a professional learning resource developed for NZ teachers at all school levels who work with bilingual Pasifika students in English medium classes. It may also be useful to teachers of bilingual classes who use a Pasifika language as the medium of instruction.

An introduction to the concept of intercultural communicative language teaching and learning: A summary for teachers
This review and report discusses intercultural Communicative Language Teaching (iCLT) and its implications for improving teaching practice – addressing the need to increase teachers’ understanding of a shift in the new learning area Learning Languages. The full report comprises a literature review and a framework of principles for good practice developed from the review. It is a synthesis of current thinking and research within the New Zealand context, and has already attracted interest from international experts in the field.

Evaluation of Teacher Professional Development Languages (TPDL)
For teachers of languages in Years 7-10 and the Impact on Language Learning Opportunities and Outcomes for Students.

Have a look at this report about Teacher Professional Development Languages (TPDL). The initiative had three components: opportunities for teachers to gain a language qualification, an opportunity to study second language acquisition methodology, and in-school facilitation and support. Evaluation findings show the languages learning component of the programme had a positive impact on the language teaching proficiency of most teachers.

Ministry of Education Language Immersion Awards 2011
Applications through AFS are now open for teachers (PDF 744KB) and students (PDF 1MB) of languages within the New Zealand curriculum (other than NZ official languages) for fully funded travel in 2011. Successful candidates will spend time overseas improving their language proficiency and cultural knowledge in authentic settings, so they can apply the knowledge and skills gained during their experience to improve language learning outcomes.

Student application deadline is 28 May 2010. Use the online student application form. Teacher application deadline is 23 July 2010. Download the teacher application form (PDF 293KB). NB: Late applications will not be accepted.

Regional facilitators for second language teaching and learning
Regional facilitators have been contracted by the Ministry of Education to support teachers and schools offering language programmes.

The New Zealand Association of Language Teachers (NZALT)
NZALT is a professional association for over 500 teachers of languages (other than English or Māori) from the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors. Their website includes access to conference details and white papers, information about professional development awards, a news page, and links to the specialist international language associations and advisers within New Zealand.

National Advisers ILANZ (International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand)

Their work is supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and the respective governments of China, France, Germany, Spain, and Japan. The National Advisers also collaborate closely with other language advisers and services. The National Advisers are based at ILANZ and managed by Victoria Link.

BBC Language Tree BBC Languages
Check out the many resources on the BBC language site. There are introductory lessons, revision activities, quick fix phrasebooks, and "guide to slang" features. French, German, Italian, and Spanish are the main languages covered, but there are also resources for a number of other languages, and a section showing the family tree of 35 European languages of Europe, with explanations of how each language evolved.
