There are links to over 2400 quality-assured materials in this community. Find them by using the menu bars and the quick search facility under the arrow on the right-hand side of the page. To go to the social studies community news page, select Social Studies from the navigation bar on the right. In the social sciences learning area there is one curriculum statement, Social Studies. Other specialist subjects base their programmes on their current syllabus: Economics, Geography, and History. Select their links for purchasing details.

Explore The New Zealand Curriculum online and link to a range of resources and support materials. The revised curriculum will become mandatory from Feb 2010. Schools are encouraged to begin working towards its implementation. Check out the new section Strategies for Getting Started, and add comments to share your expertise and experiences.

Meet the Locals.

'Meet the Locals' Conservation Week 08-12 September 2008
The theme for Conservation Week this year is ‘Meet the Locals – Tutakitia te Iwi Kainga’. ‘Locals’ refers to New Zealand’s native species and their habitats, the local people that work to protect them, and the special places which reflect our historic heritage. The education units, along with more information about Conservation Week, are available on the Conservation Week website, www.conservationweek.org.nz. As well as screening on TV6, the Meet the Locals clips are available on both the DOC website, www.doc.govt.nz, and the TVNZ website, www.tvnz.co.nz.

Take part in a NASA / Discovery Channel project and win a videoconference system for your school. Participation is for ages 12-14 and may be out of school hours. You need to present a five-minute performance and be available on the date (probably 1/2 October). User-contributed content icon. New category of websites: User-contributed content
In response to the changing nature of the Internet, TKI will now link to selected social software (Web 2.0) sites. Social software allows users to contribute content and to collaborate with others using blogs, wikis, and other tools. These sites will have the head and shoulders icon to show that they contain user-contributed content. While all sites are still subject to rigorous quality-assurance processes, teachers are advised to evaluate this category of sites carefully for relevance and accuracy, and to consider any privacy and security issues before using them with students.

The RSNZ advocates for teachers of the sciences, mathematics, social sciences, and technology. Their current work with the subject associations will assist with this. They have also established a database to enable them to communicate directly with primary and secondary teachers to inform them of opportunities to apply for funding, or of news which will help with teaching. LEOTC. Learning Experiences Outside the Classroom (LEOTC)

Use the facilities on this website for searching the online heritage collections of New Zealand's archives, galleries, libraries, and museums. The site is available in te reo Māori and English and includes photographs, drawings, paintings, sculpture, and some 3D virtual museum objects, as well as sound files and textual items. The site features the arts, geography, history, the natural environment, people, and events.

The Film Archive. The Film Archive: On Disk Library for Secondary Schools
Check out the archived programmes now available in digital format through The New Zealand Film Archive. The geography, history, and social studies collections support NCEA prescriptions in these subjects, and there are disks for New Zealand topics of immigration, wars, women, youth, and New Zealand identity themes. The education package for each disk includes a teacher’s booklet, with online lesson plans being available for some. Borrowing the disks is free for New Zealand schools; orders can be made online from the site.

Social Sciences Online
The Social Sciences Online website (SSOL) is currently under development and is expected to be available on TKI in early 2008. The site will be an interactive online community that encourages contribution, communication, and collaboration of all teachers of social sciences throughout New Zealand. Each section of the site: Economics Online, Geography Online, History Online, and Social Studies Online will be moderated. The site will contain generic material, and will also allow for the publishing of material, news and links, listservs, teacher resource exchange, and will have an 'ask' function for questions.
