New category of websites: User-contributed content
In response to the changing nature of the Internet, TKI will now link to selected social software (Web 2.0) sites. Social software allows users to contribute content and to collaborate with others using blogs, wikis, and other tools. These sites will have the head and shoulders icon to show that they contain user-contributed content. While all sites are still subject to rigorous quality-assurance processes, teachers are advised to evaluate this category of sites carefully for relevance and accuracy, and to consider any privacy and security issues before using them with students.

Olympic Resource for Languages
Make use of these language lesson plans created by the Modern Languages Teachers’ Association of Victoria for students to learn Olympic Games and sports-related vocabulary for their language of study. The resource prepares students for a school-based Olympic celebration held in the language they are learning.

Clavis Sinica: Chinese Voices Project
Explore this collection of mini-essays written and read by young Beijingers for students of Chinese language and culture. Topics cover aspects of Chinese social, economic, and cultural life, and each essay has the transcript in Chinese characters. An applet offers pinyin pronunciation and the English meaning of the characters.

Cracking the Code
Encourage your students to use these animations and interactive links designed to help them understand and learn the basis and structure of Chinese and Japanese characters. The teacher resource provides an introduction to the character system, and outlines essential concepts and processes for exploring the character system.

Asia Knowledge
Engaging with Asia is vital to New Zealand’s future. The new Asia Knowledge kete on TKI is aligned to the new curriculum and provides information and teaching resources for becoming Asia Aware. It includes an integrated teaching and learning resource on the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.

National Advisers ILANZ (International Languages Aotearoa New Zealand)
The National Adviser: Chinese focuses specifically on providing support for the teaching and learning of Chinese in New Zealand schools. This includes developing language and cultural knowledge, and improving classroom practice. The work of the National Adviser: Chinese is supported by the New Zealand Ministry of Education and the Chinese government. The National Advisers are based at ILANZ and managed by Victoria Link.

teachers and schools offering language programmes.
The New Zealand Association
of Language Teachers (NZALT)
NZALT is a professional association for over 500 teachers of languages (other
than English or Māori) from the primary, secondary, and tertiary sectors.
Their website includes access to conference details and white papers, information
about professional development awards, a news page, and links to the specialist
international language associations and advisers within New Zealand.

The Essentials of Language Teaching
This comprehensive US web resource provides professional reading and best practice guidelines for educators involved in teaching languages. The material includes a general description of learner-centred instruction and reflective teaching practice, with sections to develop understanding of language teaching methodology, and practical suggestions for teaching specific language skills. Although designed for tertiary level instructors the principles can apply to all language teaching.

Chinese Language Foundation
Check out the website for the Chinese Language Foundation which was established to promote and support the teaching and learning of Chinese language in New Zealand. The site contains information about the advantages of learning Chinese, notices about professional development opportunities and professional support, and links to access teaching and learning material. There is also an email forum for educators, and lists of New Zealand tertiary institutions and schools teaching Chinese.

Have you ever used "Favourites" or "Bookmarks" to store
your favourite websites so you can find them again later? TKI Kete on Te
Kete Ipurangi functions in the same way only better! And it's absolutely
free! Using the TKI kete function, you can save different types of resources,
including websites, in your own space on TKI. This way you can access your
favourites from any computer with Internet access. To find out more, click
