The final Te Reo Māori in the New Zealand Curriculum will be complete by February 2009. This curriculum is specifically targeted at schools where the main language of instruction is English. To find out more about the curriculum, how it came about, what it means for teachers and students and what materials will be available to support it, go to the key collection, Te Reo Māori in Schools Strategy.

Explore The New Zealand Curriculum online and link to a range of resources and support materials. The revised curriculum will become mandatory from Feb 2010. Schools are encouraged to begin working towards its implementation. Check out the new section Strategies for Getting Started, and add comments to share your expertise and experiences.

A pilot PD programme for secondary school teachers of te reo Māori was introduced to deepen teacher understanding of second language acquisition and to use a range of second language teaching strategies to improve student learning outcomes. The PD programme was evaluated to assess the effectiveness of the programme.

Workshops on new Curriculum Guidelines for Te Reo Māori in English Medium Schools, March-April 2009
The Curriculum Guidelines for Teaching and Learning Te Reo Māori in years 1 to 13 in English-medium settings Te Aho Arataki Marau mō te Ako i te Reo Māori – Kura Auraki will be launched in February 2009, and 20 one-day workshops will be held nationally during the month of March and early April 2009 to assist schools to use these guidelines. The guidelines have been developed for primary and secondary schools where te reo Māori is a second language. They have been designed to support teachers with a range of language teaching expertise and proficiency in te reo Māori. 900 spaces are available for teachers, members of senior management in schools, whanau representatives, support staff members, the Resource Teachers of Māori or a Board of Trustees members.
