The Knowledge Breakfast – "Parents as Partners" video segments

The "Parents as Partners" segments were first broadcast live on Saturday mornings, May to July 2002, on TV1, as part of the locally produced The Knowledge Breakfast television series. The series was repeated during September and October 2002.

Parents as Partners segments

1. Media in the Home

Television, videos, and computer games provide rich learning opportunities for children in the home. Parents can participate and help children learn, by watching with them and talking about what they have seen on screen. In this segment, presenter David Copeland is joined by Ministry of Education staff member Denise Arnerich, to explore the everyday media we have in the home which can be used to support children's learning.

5. The Teenage Years

Presenter David Copeland is joined by Ministry of Education staff member Sue Douglas, to look at the teenage years – a time when young people need to explore their boundaries as they grow into adulthood. They explore how parents might find the balance to support the learning of their teenagers, in partnership with the school.

6. Kids Point of View

As children grow up they explore their values, and often want save the world, starting in the home. Presenter David Copeland is joined by teacher Raewyn Baldwin-Denton, to discuss how parents might respond to the newly discovered fervour of the teen – in partnership with their local school.

7. The Balancing Act

Parents are their children's first teachers – but it can be daunting to know what best to do for your child. Presenter David Copeland is joined by the Ministry of Education's Cherie Nuku, to discuss how parents can assist their children in finding a balancing between learning and leisure.

8. Online Worlds

Increasingly children are immersing themselves in digital worlds, through computer games such as Age of Empires, and online where they have mana, decision-making power, and status. How can parents and schools inhabit these worlds too? In this segment, presenter David Copeland is joined by the head of the National College of Design and Technology, John Denton, to discuss this phenomenon of the new millennium.
