In this item, first broadcast as part of Ministry of Education "Know How" series, the students of Berkley Normal Middle School in Hamilton, research the very real need for a way to safely cross the road outside their school.

Schools are increasingly being asked to rise to the challenge of providing authentic learning experiences for their students. Teaching and learning programmes these days look at both responding to the fundamental needs of their students, for example the role of literacy and numeracy skills, and in developing attitudes in young people to help them become problem solvers and critical thinkers.
In this live interview segment, Curriculum Division manager Colin Brown, is joined by Sherwood Primary School principal Warren Patterson, and Dunedin College of Education advisor, Sharon Livingstone. They will discuss how schools are adapting to these new needs.
