Video Segment: "Expecting Success"

Producer: The Ministry of Education www.minedu.govt.nz

Spotswood Primary School in New Plymouth is a school focused on letting their students in on the secret of learning. Each morning will find the students and staff discussing their goals for learning for the day and, at the end of day, reflecting on their progress.

Principal Eric Shaw, and his team are determined to ensure that students are active participants in the process – encouraging students to consider what they want to achieve and to provide the means for the students to analyse and understand their achievements. This extends to the home where parents work in partnership with the school to support the learning process.

To be able to build on a student's individual strengths and differences, and to provide pathways to aid their learning and engagement, schools have to know their students and shape the learning experiences for them. This requires a focus on learning outcomes, and looking for the evidence of learning, so that schools can plan for student better outcomes.

In this week's live interview, the Project Manager for Schools Planning and Reporting at the Ministry of Education, Tim McMahon, is joined by Chris Saunders, Principal, Onehunga High School, and Maureen Kerr, Principal, St Patricks, Kaipoio.
