The draft Literacy Learning Progressions sets out the specific literacy knowledge and skills that students need if they are to meet the reading and writing demands of the New Zealand Curriculum. The literacy learning progressions are a professional tool for teachers and describe the knowledge and skills that students need to have developed at specific points in their schooling if they are to engage with the texts and tasks of the curriculum, and make the expected progress.

The ministries of Education and Health are looking for 50 intermediate and secondary schools to participate in the pilot stage of Mission-On’s Fuelled 4 School competition – where students are asked to come up with a plan of activity to improve the eating habits (and general health) of their peers in 2008.

e-asTTle is an online version of asTTle and is expected to become fully available to New Zealand schools in 2009. As part of the development process, primary, intermediate, and secondary schools are currently being sought to pilot e-asTTle reading, mathematics, pānui, and pāngarau in 2008. Check out this recently released double DVD compilation from New Zealand Film Archive's art/art history menu.New Zealand Sculptors has been added to the existing menu of valuable art/art history resources available free to schools from the New Zealand Film Archive's ‘On Disk’ secondary schools library. Teachers’ booklets for New Zealand Sculptors can be downloaded from the website to complement the package. Teachers can order online these DVDs and other copies of key films from the archive's collection.

This report presents an overview of the mathematics and science achievement results for year 5 students for New Zealand’s participation in TIMSS 2002. Data collected in this cycle are examined in comparison with that collected from the two previous cycles. Contextual information, such as students’ demographic background, as well as attitudes to mathematics and science, is also provided and the relationship with achievement discussed.

This report presents a descriptive overview of the mathematics and science achievement results of year 9 students. It does this using the third (2002–2003) cycle of TIMSS. This cycle builds a comprehensive picture of trends in mathematics and science achievement for year 9 students after one year of secondary schooling. Data collected in this cycle are viewed in the context of baseline data collected in New Zealand in 1994 along with data collected four years later in 1998. The report integrates and reflects on data from all three cycles.

Read this evaluation summary report for secondary teachers who teach a high number of Pasifika students. It provides guidance and information about students’ backgrounds and needs, and for teachers to improve their skills in student-centred teaching about literacy across the content areas. It also provides a strong base for teachers to make informed decisions about the literacy activities they engage their students in, and the demands of the curriculum area and complexity of the challenges Pasifika students may experience.
