Internationally renowned speaker: Andrew Cohen will speak on learner awareness of style preferences, strategy repertoire, and motivation in language learning.

Programme:

7.20: Andrew Cohen – visiting professor at the Department of Applied Language Studies and Linguistics at Auckland University , from the University of Minnesota

Andrew will discuss:

  • definitions of learning style preferences and language strategy choices in the learning of a second language;
  • the varied and fluctuating roles of language strategies, including a skills-based approach (i.e. strategies for listening, speaking, reading, writing, vocabulary, and translating);
  • a psycholinguistic as opposed to a sociolinguistic approach to language motivation;
  • characteristics of a given task;
  • the style preferences and strategies choices that may come into play in performing a given task, and the motivational factors involved as well;
  • the roles of both the teacher and the learners in sustaining learner motivation across tasks.

AUT symposium: 13 and 14 July. AUT is having a TESOL symposium on the teaching and learning of spoken language. Dr Helen Fraser is the keynote speaker.

Anticipatory Reading Guides
An anticipatory guide helps the student to start thinking about a topic and so activates their background knowledge. Prediction engages the reader with the text. Checking the accuracy of predictions after reading and having to supply evidence from the text helps with deep processing.

Think Aloud Protocols: Teaching Reading Processes to Young Bilingual Students
This 2003 article suggests that teachers of English language learners need to be able to teach students strategies that will help them read effectively, in two languages if possible. This kind of reading instruction can be helpful in alleviating the gap in academic achievement between English language learners and native English speakers.
