Professional Advice about Refugee Students and Communities

The information outlined for primary teachers of ESOL students is applicable to refugee students. In addition the following services/resources specifically meet the needs of refugee students.

Ministry of Education Refugee Education Co-ordinators

The role of the refugee education co-ordinators is to ensure accesss to quality education for refugee students and adolescents and to address teacher's professional development needs in working with groups of refugees students.

Book resources

  • A Booklet for Non-English Speaking Background Families "Families Learning Together" It is available in English, Amharic, Arabic and Somali. The main aim is to inform parents about New Zealand schooling and offer ways they can help their students.

Refugee and Migrant Service

This service is available to all refugee families in New Zealand. Its main aim is to help with resettlement. They help family's secure housing, access correct financial support, choose schools, find appropriate education courses etc. Their social worker provides support for families by visiting regularly and being able to organise meetings with interpreters. This service can act as a liaison between schools and families.

Auckland Refugees as Survivors Centre (RAS)

The Auckland Refugees as Survivors Centre is a non-profit, community based agency which exists to support and maintain the well-being of people from refugee backgrounds, who have suffered the effects of organised violence, exile and migration.

Their main aims are:

  • to provide counselling services for the treatment and rehabilitation of survivors of torture;
  • to assist people in overcoming pre- and post - migration stress and trauma;
  • to work with other community agencies and professionals for the benefit of survivors of torture and trauma;
  • to work with other community agencies and professionals for the benefit of survivors of torture and trauma;
  • to provide education and training to service professionals, refugee communities and the public of New Zealand.

  • Refugee Community Profiles for Service Providers $30 + $3 postage
    This book gives a brief introduction to many different refugee groups. It provides information about religion, history of the country, maps, culture, languages spoken etc. It is an excellent point of reference for schools. Much of the information could be put directly into ethnic boxes (see resource area of this site for more information on Ethnic boxes)
