Listening Dictation

How to Use Listening Dictation
Explain the process to the students. Give students a partially completed graph or other visual. Read out the missing statements in short sentence-length chunks. Repeat each sentence twice. Speak at a normal pace. Pause after each sentence to give students time to process the sentence meaning and add to the graph.

The Benefits of Listening Dictation
Teaches students the importance of concentrating on listening - listening plays an important role in school learning but it is seldom taught.

Example of Listening Dictation: Year 9 Maths

  1. The following graph shows the amount of time (hours per month) spent on homework for Year 9 and 13 students. Please complete a title for the graph and label the axes.
  2. In March Year 13 students averaged 52 hrs of homework.
  3. Year 9 students in May averaged 22 hrs of homework.
  4. The range for Year 13 is 76 hrs.

Listening Dictation

The students then compare Years 9 and 13 using mathematical language.

You may need to model the use of mathematical language. For example:
Year 13 students have a larger range (or spread) than the Year 9 students.
On average (generally)...

How to use conjunctions such as but and whereas may need to be taught.
