Working with English Language Learners: A Handbook for Teacher Aides and Bilingual Tutors
Working with English Language Learners: A Handbook for Teacher Aides and Bilingual Tutors (PDF 2.8MB) is a new resource to assist teacher aides, bilingual tutors, and teachers working with English language learners. The handbook is intended to be used by teachers in charge of ESOL programmes to provide professional development for teacher aides (or bilingual tutors). A particular target is the schools which have few opportunities to access professional support for working with English language learners because they are a long way from main centres, with few ESOL-funded students.
However, the handbook is not intended to replace professional development for teacher aides working in ESOL programmes, and schools are encouraged wherever possible to participate in programmes such as the Pasifika Bilingual Teacher Aide project and the English Language Assistants (ELA) programme. Schools will be advised early in Term 4 of the regions in which these programmes will be provided in 2009.
The Handbook is designed to be completed as a professional development programme over two terms, taking approximately two hours per fortnight. It consists of ten modules for teacher aides to work through, in conjunction with the teacher in charge of ESOL at their school. Other possibilities for using the handbook are also suggested on pages 9 and 10.
The Migrant and Refugee Education Team hope that ESOL teachers and teacher aides find this handbook a valuable resource for their professional development and that it will benefit both teachers and learners.
