Some simple strategies for teachers of ESOL students

Be conscious of your use of language.

  • Speak clearly, and not too quickly.
  • Use pauses to allow for thinking/processing time.
  • Avoid slang and idiom - if you do use it, explain it.
  • Explain technical terms.
  • Emphasise key words.
  • Provide the written form of instructions

Provide an environment where students feel comfortable about speaking.

  • Encourage cooperative learning.
  • Allow students to process new ideas in their first language.
  • Check that students understand by asking them to explain what they have heard or by using open- ended questions.

Give models of work.

  • Show examples of finished work to allow students to see what is expected.
  • Encourage learners to take responsibility for their learning.

Provide adequate time to complete activities.

  • It takes longer to process information in a new language.
