Some simple strategies for teachers of ESOL students
Be conscious of your use of language.
- Speak clearly, and not too quickly.
- Use pauses to allow for thinking/processing time.
- Avoid slang and idiom - if you do use it, explain it.
- Explain technical terms.
- Emphasise key words.
- Provide the written form of instructions
Provide an environment where students feel comfortable about speaking.
- Encourage cooperative learning.
- Allow students to process new ideas in their first language.
- Check that students understand by asking them to explain what they have
heard or by using open- ended questions.
Give models of work.
- Show examples of finished work to allow students to see what is expected.
- Encourage learners to take responsibility for their learning.
Provide adequate time to complete activities.
- It takes longer to process information in a new language.
