Anticipatory Reading Guides
An anticipatory guide helps the student to start thinking about a topic and so activates their background knowledge. Prediction engages the reader with the text. Checking the accuracy of predictions after reading and having to supply evidence from the text helps with deep processing.

Professional Reading
Think Aloud Protocols: Teaching Reading Processes to Young Bilingual Students
This 2003 article suggests that teachers of English language learners need to be able to teach students strategies that will help them read effectively, in two languages if possible.

Main changes resulting from the revision

The revision has resulted in minor changes, particularly to special notes, performance criteria, and ranges, to clarify the parameters for assessment and moderation. Element 3 of unit standard 17360 has been merged into element 2, and the title of the standard has been altered to reflect this change. ESOL International

The first term has been a busy one for teachers of international students. Due to the competitive market place, which has developed because of the decrease in numbers, international students are looking for specialised and quality educational programmes. This has resulted in a period of reflection and adjustment for some schools. An important part of our work has been in supporting mainstream teachers with international students. This involves workshops both in school and at Kohia Teachers' Centre. If you are interested in these workshops please contact us. We are also developing a process of reflection, which we can discuss with you.

We look forward to working with you.
