School Support Services Newsletters
TEAM Solutions Secondary School ESOL Newsletter Term 3: 2006
Greetings, ESOL teachers
We trust that you are refreshed and in good health at the start of the term. As you work together with your mainstream colleagues to ensure that individual students achieve their potential, we offer this whakatauki:
Mä te mahitahi ka tütuki ngä whiwhinga - by working together we can achieve our goal.
The ESOL team of facilitators would like to thank all those ESOL and mainstream teachers who took part in the ELIP project last term. All the participants agreed on the value of working in a cross curricula team to produce units of work in mainstream subject areas that had a specifically language focus. The intention is to finish those units of work and make them available on line. If you would like to discuss using the ELIP resource by yourself or with mainstream colleagues, please contact one of the ESOL team.

Wanting to run some professional development with your colleagues? Check out the new
principles for planning that show how to integrate language and content objectives.
Grad DipTESSOL
This is for you and your mainstream colleagues! Talk to colleagues who are on the course or have done the course. Watch out for the scholarship application forms that will be in your school this term. The scholarships pay the university fees of the core Grad Dip TESSOL papers. Any queries, contact Jenni Bedford or Margaret Kitchen. Email:

Curriculum Project
Copies of the Draft Curriculum will be in schools after the launch by the Minister of Education on 31 July.
We Encourage schools to become familiar with the background, explore the draft when it arrives and be part of the consultation process. The place of ESOL in the Curriculum is still a question that requires more discussion. It is imperative that ESOL teachers enter into dialogue with mainstream teachers to ensure that the needs of new learners of English will be adequately met in all areas of the curriculum.
The website is www.cmp.ac.nz. It is being updated constantly and a key message we have been asked to give to schools is that they become familiar with the website, ahead of and during the consultation period, late July - late November 2006.
