Tandi Wright – Alannah
Key questions:
- Do you ever audition for a role that's not your style?
- Isn't it a bit degrading playing a bimbo in Being Eve?
- Is the role of Alannah a caricature or a real person?
- What did you do to prepare for this role?
"A cross between Nancy Reagan and Marilyn Monroe" is how Tandi Wright describes her character Alannah Lush, Eve's outrageous stepmother in Being Eve.
"She won't leave her bedroom without makeup and always wears 4-inch heels," says Wright.
In Alannah's world, everything is black and white. If you're nice, people are nice back. If you work hard, you'll reap the benefits. And if you really want something, you'll get it – including the acceptance of your boyfriend's kids – which is something Alannah is constantly striving for.
"She's always ready to help, even when you don't want her to. You probably don't realise it but she can make you a better person," says Wright.
"As far as Alannah is concerned, Eve spends a little too much time in her own head but it's nothing the right outfit and a push-up bra won't fix. Allanah's goal is to speed up Eve's transition to womanhood."
Wright is well known to many television viewers for her role as Caroline Buxton in the popular New Zealand drama series Shortland Street – part she won shortly after graduating from the New Zealand Drama School.
She has also appeared in other television series including Xena (in which she played the leader of a harem) and Enid Blyton Adventures.
Wright's theatre credits include The Taming of the Shrew, Dead Funny, and the hit New Zealand Actors Company production of A Midsummer Night's Dream, in which she performed with fellow Being Eve star Stephen Lovatt.
She won an award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Chapman Tripp Theatre Awards 2001 for her role as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream.
