Exploring Moving Pictures with Sima Urale
Sima began performing at an early age when she and her sisters danced and sang to their mother's ukulele at family gatherings. An early passion for art led on to a successful career as an actor in Wellington and Dunedin. After several years of acting, Sima decided to explore film as a medium for expressing her ideas and spent three years at Swinburne, the Victoria College of Arts School of Film in Australia. Sima's first film after finishing her training, O Tamaiti, won best short film at the Venice International Film Festival and at the Asia Pacific Film Festival. Sima continues to work in Wellington.
I really like composition in films, you know, what's in the frame. I try to look at each shot like a painting.

The Creative Explorer film activity gives your students the chance to edit their own very short film. They can select a number of shots and sequence shots to make a story. By changing or editing the shots (that is, cutting them in or out of the sequence), they will alter the meaning and pace of the film. The instructions on how to use the Creative Explorer editing bench are below.
