"She carries her workbook everywhere and is always thinking about her work, which takes a lot of energy."

"Gathering information, exploring ideas, and making photographs is her way of life."

"The title is a way to give the viewer a clue about the image and to add another level of meaning that may not be so obvious in the photo."

"When she's creating a photograph, Fiona imagines the finished work in her head first."

"Now she is more interested in focussing on the photograph itself and not on having anything distracting in the frame."

3. Process, Pathways and Works

"You are only limited by your imagination in the materials you use to create art with." Robyn Kahukiwa.

a. Go to Patricia Grace and locate Robyn Kahukiwa in the forest. Click on Robyn and explore information about this Māori painter. See if you can find a link back to Fiona Pardington by clicking on a yellow highlighted word.

What materials does Robyn use for her artwork?
What materials does Fiona use for her photo titled Nurse Foley?

b. Locate Robyn again by clicking on the highlighted word Painting. Find out what is meant by the term "Contemporary Māori art"?

c. Using Pop Ups from the Dictionary, or blue keywords under Painting, (NZ) find out about two of the following well-known NZ painters and compare their works e.g. What is their style? What did they paint? What did they use?

Charles Goldie
Frances Hodgkins
Rita Angus
Colin McCahon
Sir Toss Woollaston
Dick Frizell
Patrick Hanly
Robin White
Cliff Whiting

d. Go to Fiona Pardington PATHWAYS and locate this quote:

"I'm looking directly at people that no longer exist, in times and places that no longer exist. There's that intense feeling of continuing a story imaginatively, which is this really weird thing you can do when you look at photographs."

Flip through newspapers and magazines to find a photo that interests you and which you could imagine a whole story around it. Tell your story to someone!

Draw a picture of their face and add a feature that would enhance your imaginative story about that person.
