Unit Seven : Creative Explorer - Artists in the Community

Activities

5. Fiona Pardington and Robyn Kahukiwa - two visual artists

Art works that reflect changes in the community
The topics for Fiona's art works have changed over time because her ideas have been affected by the information gathered and the events that continue to shape her life.

How open are you to change? Think of a topic you once felt strongly about and how over time that feeling has changed. For example:

  • A school friend
  • Your brother or sister
  • musical tastes.
Reflect on what events you have experienced have caused those changes.

Photography as history
Go to the centre drop down menu and locate HISTORY and STYLES.
Read the information at those sites.
Go to INFLUENCES - Historic.

Fiona states

"I'm looking directly at people that no longer exist in times and places that no longer exist. There's that intense feeling of continuing a story imaginatively which is this really weird thing you can do when you look at photographs."
Locate a book with some good photographs and try an imaginative exercise. Choose a photo you like and invent a story around the picture. Say who, where, what is happening and why. Say what might happen next.

Photography as personal statements
Fiona's photography has a lot of personal meaning and feeling attached. By reading about her photos we come to a better understanding of how an artist uses subject matter from the immediate community to create a quality art work.
For example:
Go to MELTDOWN, NURSE FURLEY, ORACLE, PRIZE OF LILIES
