7. Encouraging young artists in the community

As teachers you have an important role to play in nurturing and encouraging the young emergent artists in your school community. Here are some ideas to help you in this process.

a. Identify the students who have an interest and or talent in the arts.

b. Promote and encourage their creative efforts by:

  • Putting them in touch with teachers who are also practising artists themselves
  • Encouraging artists outside the school to visit.
  • Inviting people who have local cultural knowledge and skills relevant to the arts to visit the school.
c. Contact arts organisations to collaborate in learning experiences for students such as:
  • Participate in skills based workshops or demonstrations e.g. Maree Sheehan
  • View, listen to and respond to live performances e.g. Black Grace
  • Interview artists about social and cultural influences
  • Apply for funding for a residency project such as Composer in Schools or Writer in Schools.

d. Encourage exploration of own environment for ideas and stories to tell.

e. Find out what community help there is to foster growth including funding through community grants.
