Students will:

C1 Relationships
• Identify and compare ways of establishing relationships and managing changing relationships, for example joining or leaving groups

C2 Identity, sensitivity and respect
• Recognise instances of discrimination and act responsibly to support their own rights and feelings and those of other people, for example inclusiveness, during work, play and games.

Healthy communities and environments
Students will:

D1 Societal Attitudes and Beliefs
• Identify how health care and phyusical activity practices are influenced by community and environmental factors, for example in relation to culture

D2 Community Resources
• Participate in communal events and describe how such events enhance the well-being of the community, for example in relation to such events as cultural festivals and school productions


Specific Learning Outcomes
Students will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of the way art forms can foster social connections.
  • Recognise that the social connections established through experiencing art have an influence on their environment and community.


Activities

a. Interview different people in the community to find out about the different art forms found in the local community (town, suburb, city, or larger region).

Consider

  • What do the people thinks of as art work in the community?
  • Do they appreciate it? Why? Why not?
  • Do they talk to others about it?
  • Have they been involved in any art form themselves? With whom?
  • Think of any other questions that are relevant to your particular community.

b. In class, use your research material to debate whether art has a positive or negative effect on the community.

c. New Zealand Festival of the Arts
Research the effect of this event on the New Zealand community. Use the web site http://www.nzfestival.telecom.co.nz/ to assist you.
