Unit Nine : Creative Explorer - The Integrated Curriculum
Introduction
In this unit you will learn how Creative Explorer can assist in learning across the curriculum. Using the ideas presented you can apply the information, skills and understandings of the different Arts disciplines across other Learning Areas. Attached to each of the six artists featured in this unit are starter activities which link directly into different Learning Areas.

Essential Skills
Communication:
- Convey and receive information, instruction, ideas and feelings appropriately and effectively in a range of different cultural, language, and social contexts

- Develop good relationships with others and work in co-operative ways to achieve common goals

Specific Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- Focus on each of the artists featured in Creative Explorer and make appropriate and meaningful links to all other Learning Areas: Mathematics, Science, English, Technology, Social Studies, Health and Physical Education
- Workshop practical activities that provide other contexts for learning
- Locate further references using Creative Explorer.
Big ideas and Integration
Although each artist will be linked to Specific Learning Outcomes it is useful to note the commonalities between all the Arts disciplines. The following list is from The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum Draft, (refer to pages 76-79).

Dance
Communicate and interpret information, ideas, or narrative as they view and respond to live or recorded dance works.
Drama
Interpret or respond to dramatic literature.
Develop oral and written skills through selected activities such as role playing, script development from improvisation.
Music
Structure musical texts that combine verbal elements and sound.
Use sound, stress, and intonation to produce effects and communicate meaning.
Visual Arts
Use static and moving images to communicate ideas.
Analyse and interpret texts that combine images and words.
Mathematics
Dance
Investigate and explore patterns, relationships, symmetry and transformations in creating dance works.

Research, select and organise scientific information as material for drama such as environmental issues or the impact of scientific discovery on society.

Use scientific inquiry to explore musical phenomena such as the nature of sound, the harmonic series, or how contrasting sounds are produced.
Visual Arts
Investigate the physical properties of materials and media.
Examine how materials and media are manipulated and changed through chemical or electronic processes.

Apply technological skills and knowledge to different aspects of dance production such as designing and constructing costumes, developing and operating sound and lighting systems.
Drama
Use drama to explore particular technological problems or issues such as the environmental impact of using different forms of energy.

Visual Arts
