What's New : Creative Explorer Workshop

Welcome to the Creative Explorer workshop. The purpose of this workshop is to encourage teachers to become more familiar with Creative Explorer and to grasp it's immense potential.

The workshop is separated into 3 main areas: introduction to the CD-ROM, exploration of unit's 2-9 and management issues.

It is advised that a facilitator leads the workshop.

Times given are indications only. Actual time spent is at the individual's discretion.


1. Introduction to the CD-ROM

The purpose of activities 1-5 are to introduce the CD-ROM to the workshop participants in conjunction with the facilitator.

Introduction Activity

The overall objectives of this activity are:

  • to successfully install Creative Explorer and;
  • to discover the six artists on the CD-ROM.

The overall time frame of this activity is 1 hour.


Installation of Creative Explorer

The time frame for this activity is approximately 5 minutes.

The basic requirements for the PC is a computer with a 486MHz processor or better. The system software must be Windows 95 or later or Windows NT.

For the Macintosh computer, the basic requirements are a 68040 processor running Version 7.5 of the Macintosh system software.

The following steps will install Creative Explorer onto your computer. QuickTime 2.1.2 will need to be installed on Window's computers.

PC

  1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive
  2. Go to the 'Start' menu and select 'Run'
  3. Type 'D:\SETUP.EXE' and click 'OK'
    (if your CD-ROM drive is labelled differently, substitute the appropriate letter)
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen to install the application on the hard drive of your computer.
  5. Install QuickTime 2.1.2
    - Go to the 'Start' menu and select 'Run'
    - Type 'D:\QT32V212.EXE' and click 'OK'
  6. Once the installation is completed, launch 'Creative Explorer' by going to the 'Start' menu, selecting 'Programs', and then 'Creative Explorer'.


MACINTOSH

  1. Insert the CD into the CD-ROM drive
  2. Double-click 'Creative Explorer Installer' and follow the instructions on the screen
  3. The installer will create a 'Creative Explorer' folder on the hard drive of your computer. Double-click on the 'Creative Explorer' icon to launch the program.
  4. A Readme file is located in the installer folder on the hard drive. Please read this as it contains information about installing, launching and running Creative Explorer as well as navigation and content of the CD-ROM.


Discovery of the artists

The expected time frame for this activity is 55 minutes.

Task

Open the program and the introductory scene of a beach called 'Explore Your Own Creativity' will appear

- Explore Creative Explorer's introductory page by using the seagull as the cursor. If the seagull is moved slowly over places such as the tree, the flax, and the rock pool the users will notice a change of light and sound clues. There are six different New Zealand artists hidden in these places. Take ten minutes to investigate the artist further

- Discuss each artist with the rest of the group, particularly what inspires them, how they began to work in their field and how they go about their work.


Activity 1

The objective of this activity is to familiarise the users with specific navigational aspects of the CD-ROM particularly the BACK button and the beach.

The expected time frame of this activity is 5/10 minutes.

Task

- Select an artist from the introductory screen

  • experiment with the BACK button and the beach in the top right hand corner of the screen
  • to return to a previous page select the BACK button and it will return the user to previous pages
  • to return to the main menu or introductory page click on the top right hand corner of an artist's home page and this will return the user to the beach scene.


Activity 2

The objective of this activity is to locate the six activities available on the volcano site and to choose one and explore ideas ideally working as part of a group.

The estimated timeframe for this activity is an hour.

Task

  • Return to the introductory screen
  • select the active volcano at the top of the screen
  • select one of the six artists and explore ideas with the art forms
  • share your exploration with the rest of the group.

Instruction

The next set of activities (3,4 and 5) is ideally undertaken by a group from which pairs work through 'Worksheet A' then share their knowledge and experiences with the rest of the group.


Activity 3

The objective of this activity is to become more familiar with another artist using Worksheet A.

The expected time frame for this activity is 30 minutes.

Task

  • Return to the main page
  • select another artist
  • answer the questions on 'Worksheet A: Unit 1, activity 3'.


Activity 4

The objective of activity 4 is to locate the helper tools within Creative Explorer.

The expected time frame for this activity is 15 minutes.

Task

  • Return to the main page
  • select an artist
  • locate and become familiar with the following items:
    * Dictionary
    * Māori
    * Glossary (blue text)
    * Pop Ups
    * "Quote"


Activity 5

The objective of this activity is to review the work in activities 1 - 4.

The expected timeframe for this activity is 1 hour.

Task

  • Review your work by thinking about the questions on 'Worksheet A, Unit 1, activity 5'
  • share the information with the group.


2. Exploring Units 2 - 9

Instruction

Becoming familiar with units 2 - 9 is best completed in pairs. Choose a unit and follow the guidelines with the online activities.

On completion of the exploration, pairs can share their experiences with the group.

The expected time frame for this activity is 80 minutes when working as a group.


3. Management issues - Unit 10

In pairs, think, share and group brainstorm the possible management issues surrounding the use of this CD-ROM.

The expected time frame for this activity is 10 minutes when working as a group.
