Communicating and Interpreting in Dance (CI)
Chart 3 – Years 1–6 (Set 1)

In this strand, students develop knowledge and understanding of how dance communicates and is interpreted and evaluated.

As dancers, they learn, rehearse, and share dance works and perform them to a variety of audiences in formal and informal settings.

They develop performance skills and reflect on and evaluate their own dance.

Starter questions/ideas for class or group discussion

  • Name the different sorts of dance genres/styles you can see on the chart.
  • What words could you use to describe the type of movement that the dancer(s) in the photos are doing?
  • What are the audiences/settings for each of the dances?
  • What similarity do you notice about all the dancers? How important are focus, concentration, facial expression and projection when performing to others?
  • What sorts of footwear can you see in the different dances? What purpose does the footwear serve? How does the footwear help the dance?
  • What do the costumes tell you about where the dance comes from? For example, what do the costumes reveal about climate, environment, beliefs, and customs?
  • Which photos show traditional dance and which ones are contemporary? What are the differences?
  • Dance is a way of telling our stories. We interpret what we see in different ways. What stories are being told in the images that you see on the chart?
  • Ask students to bring photos of themselves dancing to display in a dance space on the classroom wall, in order to share, discuss, interpret and celebrate dance.
