Performers Erynne Gleeson, Lance Riley, Halina Wolyncewicz, Hannah Stannard, Debbie Fulford

About this section

This section of the DVD is divided into three subsections:

  • edited footage of the process involved in creating the dance work, with comments by the choreographer – 11 minutes 13 seconds
  • an interview with Deirdre Tarrant introducing the work – 2 minutes 37 seconds
  • a stage performance of the work in costume and lights – 10 minutes 43 seconds.

Because of the limited time (one week) he had to produce a dance work, Jeremy Nelson views Mursh Mellow not so much as a finished work but a work of 'snippets'. He mentions his liking for the rhythmic and dynamic surprises of hip-hop dance and that this appreciation has influenced his choreography.

Choreographer Jeremy Nelson trained at the London School of Contemporary Dance and, since 1984, he has been based in New York, where he continues to teach, dance, and choreograph. In 2004, he was a recipient of a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship for choreography.

You can use Mursh Mellow as part of your dance programme to explore or illustrate:

  • different ways of moving in duets
  • use of sudden changes in energy and movement qualities to create dynamic interest or surprise
  • moving in contrast and in unison with others in a group.

Viewing suggestion

We recommend that your students view only the first and/or third subsections. The second subsection is more useful as information for teachers.

You could give your students a copy of this dance recording sheet (Word 120KB) to complete before, during, and after viewing the dance work.
