How to use the resource

We suggest that you:

  • preview chapters and sections of the DVD and decide how much of the footage of any chapter or section students need to view and how many times they need to view it
  • read the online teachers' notes relating to the selected chapter or section
  • select from the bank of questions and activities written for that chapter or section to suit dance students' and programme needs. (For some questions, guidance on possible responses is provided in brackets.) Note: It is not intended that you use all the questions and activities written for a chapter/section but that you choose those that suit your class programme. You may find that activities written for other chapters/sections provide additional ideas for exploring a selected dance work.

You could use the resource to:

  • support a dance technique focus – for example, a focus on moving with continuous flow may be supported by studying Kura, or learning Dance Phrase 1
  • introduce or support information about the use of dance production technologies – for example, a focus on dance lighting could be introduced by the interview with lighting designer Maia Whittet, followed by looking at how lighting is used in Plumage or Quintet to suggest mood
  • support improvisation or choreographic work – for example, a focus on partnering might be introduced by looking at Mursh Mellow
  • support work in using props – for example, a focus on using sticks or boxes might be supported by looking at Outside the Square
  • support NCEA standards in viewing and responding to dance – for example, Kura at Level 1, or How Ugly Is That Duckling at Levels 2 or 3.
