Break-dance

(You will find break-dance on DVD 2, track 1)

Background information

Sally Banes (1994) calls break-dancing a "heavy blend of dancing, acrobatics and warfare" (page 145). It originated in the United States in the 1970s. Break-dancing teams in New York would challenge each other to decide which was the most daring in their movements. Break-dancing has influenced the dancing in music videos, and it has spread to many countries. It's particularly popular with young men but is also performed by young women. Break-dancers often wear sneakers, low pants, and T-shirts.

Break-dance relies on a great deal of strength in the arms and the ability to hold difficult balances and carry out complicated foot patterns. It is often very competitive, with dancers trying to be spectacular and outdo each other in break-dance battles. New moves are constantly being invented, many of them influenced by martial arts such as Kung Fu and capoeira, a Brazilian dance form based on a type of martial arts. Break-dancing is done on a hard surface and can be dangerous.
