Individual, Pair & Group
Mirroring – This activity can be done seated or standing, with partners, small groups or the whole class following a leader.
- In pairs, students face each other with hands up.
- One, who is the leader, makes a slow movement and the other mirrors it.
- Change leaders – a short moment of stillness signals the leadership change. With practice, changing leaders can be done without talking and without the teacher being able to spot who is leading and who is following.
Shadowing – Same as for mirroring, except students stand one behind the other.
- One leads slowly and the other follows.
- Change leaders – indicated by a 180° turn.
- Variations – try shadowing in larger groups:
- three – triangular formation,
- four – a diamond shape,
- five – diamond/square with a pivotal person in the middle.
Objects & Environments
Using a prop – such as Rakau, scarf, ball, chair, or hoop – students experiment with a variety of relationships (orientations). For example:
- over,
- under,
- around,
- between,
- away from.
