Satyagraha: Mahatma Gandhi's life in dance

Case study – Maidstone Intermediate School

Non-violence is the greatest force at the disposal of mankind. It is mightier than the mightiest weapon of destruction devised by the ingenuity of man.

Mahatma Ghandi

Introduction to Satyagraha

This case study describes the process of putting together Satyagraha, as seen through the eyes of the two teachers and the students involved in the project.

For Stage Challenge 2004, the students of Maidstone Intermediate School presented an 8-minute dance drama based upon the life of the great Indian pacifist Mahatma Gandhi. Working with performing arts teacher Annette McCrae and visual arts teacher Kerry Sherrard, 100 students spent 6 weeks creating dances, props, backdrops and costumes that culminated in their performance at the Events Centre in Wellington in May 2004.
