Level 7 unit: Being a Dance Critic

Overall duration: 15 lessons (of approximately 50 minutes each)

Curriculum links

This unit is based on the following Level 7 learning example from The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum (page 28):

  • Discuss the language and approaches used by reviewers and critics in reviewing dance.
  • View a live or recorded dance.
  • Critically analyse the dance and present a written or oral review of both the work and the performance.
  • Compare this review with a review of the same dance by an established dance reviewer or critic.

Achievement objectives

  • Strand CI - Communicating and Interpreting in Dance: Students will apply performance skills and appropriate technologies to enhance communication through dance, and will make critical responses to dance.

Intended learning outcomes

Students will:

  • read a selection of dance reviews and analyse the language used by reviewers and critics in reviewing dance
  • view a live or recorded dance performance and prepare a written and an oral review of the work
  • compare their review with a review of the same dance by an established dance reviewer
  • record in a journal the written reviews and the analysis of reviews written by established dance critics
