Level 6 unit: Global dance

Overall duration: 8-10 lessons (of approximately 50 minutes each)

Curriculum links

This unit is based on the following Level 6 learning example from The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum (page 27):

  • View and practically explore dances of a variety of ethnic groups that use specific objects as integral parts of the dance (for example taiaha, a scarf, a fan, bamboo poles, castanets).
  • In a group, investigate the who, what, when, why, where, and how of one of the dances, and present findings to the class.

Achievement objectives

  • Strand PK - Developing Practical Knowledge in Dance: Students will identify and contrast the vocabularies, practices, and technologies of selected dance forms.
  • Strand UC - Understanding Dance in Context: Students will investigate dances from selected historical periods and describe the influences on their development.

Intended learning outcomes

Students will:

  • view and analyse dances from a variety of different cultures
  • explore the use and significance of specific objects that are used as integral parts of particular dance traditions
  • investigate in a group one specific dance from a particular culture, and present the findings to the class orally, through practical demonstration, and with use of visuals and sound.
