Choreographic task 1: Creating a global dance

Duration: 5 lessons (of 50 minutes each)

Activities

Instructions to students:

  1. In small groups, research one of the dance cultures discussed in the introductory lessons.
  2. Identify the major movement motifs, body shape, dynamics, and use of prop and costume in your chosen dance genre or style.
  3. Create your own dance in the style of the dance genre or style your group has researched. Each group member must contribute choreographic ideas and some movement vocabulary.
  4. Research world music in libraries or record stores, and select appropriate music to accompany your dance.
  5. Present your findings to the class about your chosen dance genre in oral and visual format, and through your dance.

Recording in students' journals

Students record the following in their journals:

  • the process of making the dance
  • the pros and cons of collaborative group choreography
  • a description of the movement qualities you attempted either to replicate or develop
  • how you made use of the prop in relation to the movement ideas
  • how you selected the music and what impact it had on your dance
  • the style of costuming you chose, and how it impacted on the execution of the movement
  • what you discovered about this specific dance genre or style through making a group dance.
