Level 7 unit: Going Solo

This unit is based on the following Level 7 learning example from Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum (page 29):
- Choreograph a solo dance work on the theme of identity.
- Select an approach (for example personal biography, the broad concept of identity) and research and gather appropriate information (for example visual images, reflections, interviews, stories).
- Using this information, improvise and develop movement material and, within an appropriate dance form, select and use a range of choreographic devices, a suitable structure, and relevant technologies (for example props) to choreograph the solo dance.
Achievement objectives
- Strand PK - Developing Practical Knowledge in Dance: Students will extend their dance skills in the vocabulary, practice, and technology of at least one selected dance form.
- Strand DI - Developing Ideas in Dance: Students will initiate and develop dance works that use choreographic devices, processes, and structures and appropriate technologies to express ideas. Students will record dance to support the development and resolution of dance ideas.
Intended learning outcomes
Students will:
- create a three minute solo dance on the theme of identity
- research and gather information in preparation for making the dance
- improvise and develop movement material within an appropriate dance form
- select and use a range of choreographic devices and structures and relevant technologies to create a solo dance
- record the results of the choreographic process.
