An invitation to a birthday!
Level 1, for use with poster 1
Present the students with a letter inviting them to a birthday party of a particular role, for example, a dragon. Have the students discuss what they think the dragon will be like:
- “I’m not sure if it would be a good idea to go to this party. What do you think? Will the dragon be scary or friendly?”
- “I wonder what kind of food he would like to eat? I wonder if there will be anything there that we would like to eat? What if there isn’t? How could we solve that problem? If we take him a birthday cake, what shall we put on it?”
- “What would he like to play with at his party? How do we know what presents he would like?”
This idea offers an opportunity for students to create the imaginary role of the dragon and for them to work in whole-group role play with the teacher as the dragon.
