Role on the wall

Level 1 or higher, for use with poster 1

Choose a well-known character from a big book or a story suitable for older students. Create a role on the wall for that character, recording the external descriptive qualities of the character around the outside of the image and the internal personal qualities of the character on the inside. A possible example could be the troll from The Three Billy Goats Gruff.

To find out more about why the character has behaved in a certain way, the students could hot-seat people who know the character (mother, best friend, next-door neighbour, teacher).

Depending on the students’ response, and the picture of the character that develops, the drama could move forward in a number of ways. For example, the students could decide on ways to teach the troll better manners or how to make friends, using other drama conventions such as writing in role, freeze frame, or collective character.
