Discussion questions for years 1–8
Suggest that your students look at image 4, poster 3 (Freeze frame: a mining emergency). Then ask the following questions:
- What do you think is happening here?
- How can you tell?
- How do you think this person is feeling (indicating a specific person in the image)?
- How have the students placed themselves in the freeze frame to tell the story?
- What techniques are being used to tell that story?
- What words would you use to describe this image?
- Where is the focus in this image? How can you tell?
- What would happen if you changed the focus to a different point? How would the story change?
- What would each of the people say if this image was brought to life?
You could ask your students to make the freeze frame shown in this image to investigate it further.
You could compare and contrast conventions like hot seating and freeze frame and ask why you would use each of these conventions (for example, to find out specific information and to focus ideas).
