Introduction
This section provides an explanation of the drama poster teachers’ notes, how they relate to The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum and how they can be used in the classroom.
About these notes
These teachers’ notes provide background information and offer discussion questions and starter activities for use in classroom drama programmes. The notes for each poster also include links to the curriculum, assessment links where appropriate, and links to other drama resources.
The drama posters
The drama posters are intended to support teachers of drama in years 1–13. The six thematically based posters draw on the key aspects of learning set out in the drama matrix of The New Zealand Curriculum Exemplars: The Arts. Interwoven through the illustrated key aspects of learning are the four strands of The Arts in the New Zealand Curriculum:
- Developing Practical Knowledge in Drama (PK)
- Developing Ideas in Drama (DI)
- Communicating and Interpreting in Drama (CI)
- Understanding Drama in Context (UC).
Who are the drama posters for?
Although each poster has a suggested focus age-range (see below), the full set has been distributed to both primary and secondary schools, and all six posters can be directly used, or adapted for use, in each setting.
The suggested focus age-ranges are:
- Posters 1 and 5 for years 1–8
- Posters 3 and 4 for years 1–13
- Posters 2 and 6 for years 9–13.
Ways to use the posters
Teachers and students in years 1–13 can use the posters in a variety of ways. They illustrate some of the many contexts in which the key aspects of drama may be encountered or worked with. They put drama “on the wall” as a discussion starter and as a stimulus for further learning. The posters are not intended to be all-encompassing. Many other drama possibilities could have been pictured.
