Dance programme facilities
When planning development of dance facilities, it is worthwhile beginning by discussing and agreeing your school's vision for the arts in general and for dance in particular. To help you do this, consider the questions on the 'Vision for the arts' page with special reference to dance.
Requirements
Dance has some requirements that apply at most curriculum levels. They include the following:
- clear open space is vital for all dance, and includes clear vertical space
- physical safety is an issue for dance as much as it is for physical education – so good quality wooden floors and walls with no protrusions are important
- sprung flooring is essential at higher year levels
- normal school clothes are not suitable for dance beyond the first few years, so changing areas and storage for students' personal items is required
- privacy and emotional safety should be taken into account when setting up dance studios and changing areas – for many students taking part in dance is a new experience.
