Year 1–8 dance programme needs
As with music, some dance can be done in general classrooms, especially in the first few years. Level 1 and 2 curriculum learning examples (such as stretching and bending, copying movements of others, and making machine actions) can be started in general classrooms. The advantage of doing this is that some dance can be done daily.
However, space will quickly become an issue. Dance specialists recommend that a space separate from the classroom be available for all year levels, and that providing a specialist performing arts space should be the aim for all schools wherever possible.
In summary, dance teaching needs:
- plenty of floor space *
- a good floor, preferably sprung
- high ceilings
- no protrusions on walls or ceilings
- a good sound system
- good acoustics.
Physical education facilities (gyms) are generally not set up to be suitable for dance (in terms of wall protrusions, equipment, and acoustics). And gyms are usually in such high demand that dance classes do not get sufficient access. In any case, it is important that dance is acknowledged as part of the curriculum by having its own environment.
