Performing Arts Facilities in Schools

Year 9–13 drama programme needs

When planning development of secondary school drama facilities, take into account:

Drama is a multi-arts discipline, incorporating elements of music, dance, theatre, visual arts, electronic media, and literary research. A vibrant drama programme could embrace activities like film making, design and production of masks, sets, and puppets, and music making. In fact, drama often goes beyond the arts and into technology, business, and marketing, especially where productions are concerned.

Many secondary schools are developing specialist drama suites that will cater for senior students working towards national qualifications. When planning facilities, it is important to fully research the breadth of qualifications credits available through drama (including off-stage skills), and the links between drama and other curriculum areas, including visual arts, media studies, and technology.

In general, good drama facilities will be suitable for all levels of secondary school drama, from year 9 to national qualifications levels. However, remember that research and technology become more significant at higher levels.

Schools with few senior drama students often develop a specialist drama block or multi-use facility in which drama is the major user. These basic facilities are also used for performances.

Often a major issue for schools is balancing the needs of the drama curriculum with wider demands for an auditorium or theatre. For advice on these issues, see the 'Theatres and auditoriums' section of this site.
