Performing Arts Facilities in Schools

Technology for drama suites

Drama programmes rely heavily on technology of various sorts. When planning drama facilities, the following points need to be taken into account.

Theatre technology: Students can gain national qualifications credits by developing skills in performing arts technology. Some schools enable students to fully participate in drama programmes without doing any acting. Instead they spend all of their time on lighting, sound, set design, and construction.

The National Qualifications Framework enables students to work across disciplines, so students enrolled in visual arts, technology, and media studies may also work within drama programmes. These other students' needs must be allowed for during planning of a drama suite.

Computers: Drama students need access to computers, including the internet. Research is a significant part of the curriculum at higher levels.

Access to video and sound recording and editing equipment is essential for a range of reasons – to reflect on performances, for assessment and moderation, and for training in film, television and radio drama. The most sophisticated drama suites incorporate a television and radio studio.

Security and safety must be taken into account when technical equipment is being used and stored. Well-designed facilities safeguard students and equipment.
