Performing Arts Facilities in Schools

Fendalton Open-air Primary School

A new multi-use facility of ingenious design provides flexible specialist learning spaces for a range of curriculum learning areas, including the performing arts. (A community-owned hall on the campus is used by the school for physical education.)

The multi-use facility consists of a large central space that can be divided into three rooms, each about the size of a standard classroom.

Specialist facilities are attached to two of the central spaces. These are fully equipped bays for home economics and science, and a small room for visual arts. The bays are designed to be used in conjunction with the adjacent larger spaces, converting them into different specialist rooms for whole classes.

The two sets of folding doors that divide the main space can be manipulated by one adult and provide good sound insulation. Round folding tables and stackable chairs enable these rooms to be used as conventional classrooms or open performing arts spaces.

The main space is used for dance, music, and drama classes, either in sections or as a whole space. Two of the sections of the central space have vinyl flooring on concrete. The end section is carpeted, has tiered seating, and is fitted with simple stage lighting.

Large cupboards opening into the centre space store music and audiovisual equipment. Natural light in all sections of the main space can be dimmed by used commercial grade roller blinds, and the high ventilation windows are electrically controlled.

The central space opens onto a covered 'street', used as an extension to the classroom spaces.

Elsewhere on the campus, one of the school's original 'open air' classrooms is fitted out as a music room, with two small music practice rooms attached. The timber lining of the old building provides excellent acoustics. A storage area runs the length of one wall and its doors are faced with full-length mirrors for dance classes.
