Intermediate schools' needs
Most year 7–8 (intermediate) schools have well-established music facilities. Many are highly sophisticated and go beyond the basics described here. In many cases, community use has helped shape and expand the facilities and given access to resources beyond funding provided by the Ministry of Education.
In terms of basic needs, those listed for years 1–8 also apply to years 7–8.
However, specialists agree that year 7–8 students should have access to a specialist facility, preferably one reserved for music.
A specialist music facility will have:
- excellent acoustics
- good quality sound equipment, including recording capability
- easily accessed storage for a large collection of instruments
- an area for chairs and tables, plus a more flexible open area
- keyboard laboratory with space for computer stations
- an area for electronic and band instruments
- DVD/video viewing equipment, with a large screen.
Some of the advice offered for secondary schools can also apply to year 7–8 facilities, such as the need for kitchen facilities and after hours access.
