Moving outside
Many schools make use of existing external features and open music facilities to the outdoors. A grassy bank, a grove of trees, or a high brick wall can create a natural amphitheatre or sound shell effect. This can be used as an extension to a music or performance room, especially if the prevailing wind is suitable.
The room that opens can become the stage or the audience area. The area outside can extend the audience space, especially for lunchtime concerts, large groups, Māori and Pasifika events, or visiting performers.
One school has large folding glass doors opening from its small auditorium onto the paved area outside. The doors are covered by folding wooden shutters on the inside, giving the effect of a solid wall when closed.
