Floor plan for a notional multi-arts facility
All of the features described in the 'Multi-arts facilities' page have been incorporated into the following basic floor plan of a purpose-built, stand-alone facility that provides for the basic needs of curriculum dance, drama, and music, as well as the capacity for simple performances.
It is assumed that the ancillary rooms around the main working area have lower ceilings than the main space. This leaves wall space above these rooms for high windows in three walls of the main space. However, some of these ancillary spaces could have high ceilings to provide mezzanine floors for additional storage, and possibly to act as a gallery looking into the main space.
A common problem with this sort of facility is size. Take care not to make any of the spaces too small. A multi-use space of at least 80 square metres is suggested. (For recommended dimensions for each discipline, see the separate sections in this site on dance, drama, and music.)
