Common needs
While dance, drama and music each have specific teaching facility needs, some common needs and issues apply across all disciplines. Consultation with specialists has produced the following list.
- Distinction between performance spaces and teaching spaces – dance, drama, and music classes all need access to appropriate performance spaces, such as a good theatre or a venue with acoustics suitable for a range of music. But these spaces rarely provide satisfactory teaching and learning environments.
- Flexibility is the key to catering for the range of activities necessary and possible in all arts, and to allow for changes in curriculum approaches over time.
- Storage space is vital – all disciplines need a variety of spacious and conveniently sited storage areas.
- ICT facilities are increasingly needed for all of the arts, especially at senior levels.
- Flexible facilities are needed to cater for all the options available through national qualifications – senior students can now specialise in a wide range of areas, and all senior students also need study and research facilities, not just performance-oriented spaces.
- Natural light and ventilation are needed in teaching spaces (so staff don't work all day in black boxes), as well as the potential for blackout. Controlled heating is also important.
- The type of wiring is critical in all spaces, including three-phase power, lots of power points, and audiovisual cabling. Built-in cabling can create problems – you may need to balance flexibility with convenience and safety.
