Music Inside Out
Music Inside Out provides case studies of three of the community music education activities that typically complement classroom music curriculum programmes. The case studies celebrate musical achievement, and highlight how students and mentors share their passion for, and expertise in, music beyond the classroom and out into the performance world.
An annual concert hosted by Naenae College and the Wellington Society for Music Therapy showcases special-needs students and teachers from six schools performing for their families and each other in a celebration of their musical achievements. This case study highlights the broad benefits of music-making – emotional, creative, intellectual, physical, and social.
THE BIG SING is the national secondary schools singing festival, run by the New Zealand Choral Federation. This case study focuses on Burnside High School's award-winning Bel Canto choir as they prepare for, and perform in, the national final.
Visitors to Te Papa recently had the opportunity to meet and listen to members of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in person, as part of the NZSO's Community Outreach programme. This case study features interviews of players by children and teenagers in the audience, and conversations with their tutors and parents about the value of such music education experiences.
